Renaissance Capital announces three hires in International Sales
Moscow and London, September 18, 2009 – Renaissance Capital, the leading investment bank in Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, announces that Berthold Maier has joined as Director of Equity International Sales, Michael Smith as Director of DMA (Direct Market Access) International Sales, and Gina Somerton as Vice President of International Equity Sales. They will be based in London.

"We are delighted to have been able to attract such high profile professionals to Renaissance’s top class team,” said Ruben Aganbegyan, Renaissance Capital President. “We see rapidly growing interest from major international investors towards the emerging markets assets. In turn, there is a huge deferred demand for investment on the part of emerging markets, which prompted our decision to significantly boost our London office team. I am confident that the unmatched experience and track record of the newly hired professionals will be sought after in all the markets where Renaissance Capital operates,” he added.

Maier brings a wealth of experience to Renaissance Capital with a 19-year track record in emerging markets. Most recently, in 2007-2008 he has been a key member of the Global Emerging Market team covering equities, fixed income, derivatives and special situations at Bluecrest Capital Management in London. In this position, Maier successfully managed long and short equity portfolio with primary focus on EMEA & MENA regions. Prior to that, he worked as a portfolio manager at Griffin Capital Management in London implementing model-based, bottom-up investment strategy, including significant pre-IPO and IPO involvement. Maier has also held senior positions at BNP Paribas, Raiffeisen Centrobank AG and Generali Capital Management.

Michael Smith brings 20 years of sales, management and strategy development experience, including Electronic Trading solutions and new business origination. Prior to joining Renaissance, Mr. Smith has worked with Broadridge from 2006 as Senior Sales Director, and was responsible for sales of institutional services in the UK and Europe. Earlier, he managed the new business sales activities for GL Trade London Northern Europe (LNE). In this position, he formulated and executed the sales strategy to grow the LNE business across Listed Derivative STP Solutions, Emerging Market connectivity and other areas. His track record also includes a number of executive roles at UK-based financial software and trade companies.

Gina Somerton covers Russian, CIS and Sub Saharan African Equities and has worked with a number of financial institutions. From 2005 she was on the Equities EMEA team of HSBC covering Eastern Europe, Russia, African and Middle East cash equities and structured products, based out of New York and London. She successfully managed and established diverse client relationships across the UK and Europe, with particular expertise in new business origination, and was involved in numerous IPO/SPOs. Prior to that she worked in the Strategy and Products team at Gerrard Investment Managers, now part of Barclays Global Investors.
