| Renaissance Capital hosts Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, and international investors at Almaty conference |
ALMATY - Renaissance Capital today hosted more than 500 guests at its inaugural Central Asia Investor Conference on "Rediscovering Value: Navigating the New Silk Road."
The conference provided an opportunity for leading Western, Russian and local investors to interact with the management of Central Asia's leading companies as well as hear from senior government officials.
Karim Massimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, highlighted Central Asia's emergence as an economic and financial power in a speech during the plenary session of the conference. He said: "Central Asia has grown 10% annually over the last five years, with GDP across the region now reaching US$160 billion. Our region is ready to actively take advantage of new economic trends and is open for international investment."
Gerhard Schroeder, who served as Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005, stressed the vital importance of foreign investment to the economies of Central Asia and the region's role as an energy supplier to Europe while speaking at the conference. "By 2015, EU gas consumption will increase by 50 percent and reach 200 billion cubic meters," he said. "Thus, Kazakhstan is an important factor for Europe's energy security."
Renaissance Capital is well-known for organizing conferences that bring together international investors and leading corporates from the high-opportunity emerging markets where the firm operates. In the last year Renaissance Capital has hosted high-level investor conferences in Moscow, Kyiv, Lagos, London and New York. In June, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger joined more than 1000 investors at the firm's twelfth annual investor conference in Moscow.
Renaissance Capital Central Asia was established 18 months ago and has quickly become the leading full-service investment bank in the region and a major catalyst in the growth of the Central Asian capital market. The firm has market-leading positions in M&A, equity and debt capital markets and securities sales and trading.
Renaissance Capital is also the first international investment bank with a Research team in Central Asia. The firm's award-winning Central Asia analysts are based in Almaty and cover all sectors across the region. The Research team recently launched the first index covering Central Asian equities, called RENCASIA. The index (Bloomberg: RENCASIA Index), which tracks the performance of Central Asia's 13 most liquid stocks, has already become the leading benchmark for international investors investing in Central Asia.
Renaissance Capital CEO Alexander Pertsovsky, in a speech opening the conference, praised the Kazakh government for its commitment to creating a healthy environment for investors. He said: "The ongoing transformation of the Kazakh economy makes it the model for the entire region. I am extremely pleased with the investment that Renaissance Capital has made into Kazakhstan, and particularly the business we have built in Almaty over the last 18 months."
Mr. Pertsovsky continued: "The platform we have built allows us to use the favorable investment environment available in Almaty to intermediate capital throughout the region. As Central Asia continues to open up and becomes an increasingly integral part of the economic transformation which is taking place from Shanghai to Moscow, the capital that will be attracted to finance the historic business opportunities will flow through Almaty."
Other speakers at the conference included Anvar Saidenov, Governor of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, Kanat Bozumbayev, Chairman of Samruk Holding and Daulet Ergozhin, Vice-Minister of Finance of Kazakhstan. Representatives of Kazakhstan's leading corporations also spoke at the conference, including senior managers from KazMunayGas, Kazyna Holding, Alliance Bank, Bank CenterCredit, Kazphosphat, ZhaikMunay and Kazakhtelecom.
More than 200 one-on-one meetings between Central Asian corporate leaders and international investors will be held today and tomorrow as part of the conference.
